What is an SGO?

A Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that receives contributions from donors and grants educational scholarships to eligible students in Ohio. Individuals and entities that contribute to SGOs participating in the program can receive a tax credit. The SGO program was enacted in September 2021 Section 5747.43 Ohio Revised Code.

How does the tax credit work?

Your SGO donation can be claimed when you file your Ohio taxes. The credit is a dollar-to-dollar reduction in your state tax liability up to $750 per taxpayer.

A married couple filing jointly can claim a credit of up to $1,500. To receive the full tax credit, you must have an Ohio tax liability equal to or greater than the amount of the credit.

How do I donate?

To donate, click the "Donate" button at the top of the page.  You will be taken to the secure donation page to make your donation. Donations can be accepted online or by check mailed to the address at the bottom of the page. You will receive an email confirmation and a donation receipt mailed to your physical address.  For married couples, filing jointly, please include the information for both taxpayers.

What is the difference between a tax deduction and a tax credit?

Both reduce your tax bill but in very different ways.  Tax credits directly reduce the amount of tax you owe, giving you a dollar-for-dollar reduction in your tax liability.  Tax deductions, on the other hand, reduce how much of your income is subject to taxes. Generally, tax credits are more valuable than tax deductions.

Is there a cap on donations?

There is no cap to SGO donations in the state of Ohio.  Any amount is welcome.  However, you can only claim up to $750 for an individual or $1,500 for a couple as a tax credit on your Ohio income return

How do I know that HudsonSGO is a certified SGO?

Here is a link to the Ohio Attorney General’s list of certified SGOs (HudsonSGO is the doing business name of ABC Ohio Foundation):  https://charitable.ohioago.gov/Scholarship-Granting-Organization-Certification/List

Where can I read the text of the law behind SGOs?

I usually receive a refund after I file my Ohio tax return.  Does that mean I don’t qualify for the tax credit?

Here is a link to the fairly straightforward text of Credit for Donations to Scholarship Organizations:  https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-5747.73

In most cases, your donation to HudsonSGO would result in you receiving a larger refund.  Check with your tax advisor.

Do you have to be a Hudson resident or employed in Hudson to claim the tax credit?

No, all Ohio taxpayers are eligible.
